Working in the garden

We spent 5 days working in the community garden.  We focused on the following themes:

  • exploration of the  the community garden to search for signs life in the garden beds, and compost pile
  • learning how to plant seeds and transplant plants
  • learning to create a garden plan following companion planting style
  • learning about when particular plants grow and can be harvested
  • learning proper techniques to watering
  • learning proper techniques of weeding
  • learning proper techniques of composting and its importance
  • learning about the pH of soil and how to measure the optimal pH level
  • preparating and tasting of harvested fresh vegetables

What aspect of gardening interests you most?  Harvesting, transplanting, weeding, composting, soil testing, companion plants, or anything else you can think of.

Research this aspect of gardening and write an essay about it.  Explain your interest in the topic, further information gained from your research, what you learned from NYRP and how it applies to the Bedford-Stuyvesant Community Garden, and areas you would like to learn more about.
